Italiano shared details of the project in a Facebook video, stating: “The project involves collaboration with the Agricultural University of Tirana, which will cultivate several hectares of land to assess the potential of local crops for biofuel production.” This effort builds on discussions held in July 2024 with Albanian government officials, focusing on the potential use of degraded lands for growing agri-feedstock for bio-refining.
Eni has been active in Albania’s energy sector for several years. In December 2019, the company signed a production sharing agreement for oil exploration in the onshore Dumre block, holding a 100% equity interest. Following geophysical surveys conducted in 2021 and 2022, Eni initially planned to start preliminary work in January 2024 but postponed the launch to December 2024. Italiano noted: “Eni planned to begin preliminary works in Dumre in January 2024.”
In a separate development, Eni signed an agreement in February 2025 with Masdar, a United Arab Emirates-based renewable energy company, and Taqa Transmission, an electricity transmission company, to serve as the preferred off-taker of renewable energy produced in Albania. This partnership supports Eni’s commitment to expanding sustainable energy initiatives in the region.
The Lushnje biofuel project aligns with Eni’s broader strategy to develop sustainable energy solutions, leveraging local agricultural resources to produce biofuels. By partnering with academic institutions and utilizing degraded lands, the project aims to contribute to Albania’s renewable energy goals while promoting environmentally friendly practices. The collaboration with the Agricultural University of Tirana underscores Eni’s focus on integrating local expertise and resources into its energy projects.
Eni’s ongoing efforts in Albania, including the Dumre exploration and renewable energy agreements, reflect its dedication to supporting the country’s energy transition and fostering sustainable economic development through innovative energy solutions.
