The Ontario site will serve as a validation center for materials developed at Harmoniz’s primary R&D center in the Netherlands and as a demo site designed for North American needs. It will enable simultaneous trials with European operations, allowing the introduction of pre-commercial varieties to the market earlier. “The North American climate creates unique growing challenges – from extreme winters to hot, humid summers,” said Stephan Vonk, Area Sales Manager for Canada and the USA. “By establishing a dedicated facility in Ontario, we’re positioned to develop varieties specifically adapted to these growing conditions.”
Harmoniz also supports a specialized testing program at a separate Canadian location, focusing on ToBRFV-resistant varieties. Using advanced genomic and molecular techniques, these varieties undergo thorough evaluations against local virus strains throughout full growing cycles. This effort connects to the company’s global testing network in Israel, Spain, and Sicily, ensuring suitability for North American markets. “When growers see the ToBRFV-resistant designation on a Harmoniz variety, they can be confident it’s, besides lab tested, backed by thorough testing under local conditions, and that will get the best combination of plant performance, high resistance, and fruit quality,” Vonk added.
The facility supports Harmoniz’s ‘Select’ initiative, which fosters partnerships to create value across the supply chain. By selecting optimal genetics and collaborating with aligned stakeholders, the initiative helps growers achieve consistent results, retailers offer distinctive and durable products, and consumers enjoy exceptional vegetables. “We are committed to providing growers with the varieties and support they need to succeed,” Vonk stated, “delivering consistently high-performing, recognizable products that growers, retailers, and consumers will choose time and time again.”
This new hub underscores Harmoniz’s dedication to advancing horticulture and supporting North American growers with innovative, reliable, and market-ready solutions.
