On Sunday, China’s State Council, chaired by Premier Li Qiang, approved several new nuclear power projects, including Phase III of the Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant in Zhejiang province. The meeting emphasized the importance of ensuring the highest safety standards for nuclear power development. It stated: “It called for strictly enforcing the primary responsibility of construction and operating entities, building and operating nuclear power units in line with the world's highest safety standards, and continuously strengthening safety supervision.”

The second phase of the Sanmen nuclear power plant in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, commenced construction.

The Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant, a major clean energy hub in East China, will reach a total installed capacity of 7.5 million kilowatts upon completion of Phase III. According to China Energy News, the approvals included five nuclear power projects comprising 10 reactor units across Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shandong, Fujian, and the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. Since 2022, China has approved at least 10 nuclear units annually, with these projects representing a combined investment of over 200 billion yuan ($27.45 billion).

This year marks the 70th anniversary of China’s nuclear power industry, highlighting its role in advancing clean energy. The new projects are expected to drive significant investment and support the nation’s sustainable energy goals by expanding nuclear power capacity in key regions.

The meeting also addressed welfare improvements for disadvantaged children, emphasizing the need to prioritize their development and well-being. It noted: “It is necessary to adhere to the principles of prioritizing children's development and the things that are most beneficial to children, and jointly safeguarding the healthy growth of disadvantaged children.” The discussion called for enhanced services in basic life security, medical rehabilitation, education, mental health, and other areas, alongside targeted policies to meet children’s needs. It also underscored the importance of protecting children’s rights and addressing violations through legal measures.

Additionally, a draft medical security law was approved in principle and will be submitted to the National People’s Congress Standing Committee for review. The meeting highlighted: “This legislative process will serve as an opportunity to further improve China's healthcare security policy system and effectively safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of insured individuals.” The law aims to strengthen oversight of healthcare funds and combat fraudulent practices, such as false medical treatments.

The State Council also launched a campaign to protect and enhance the ecological health of rivers and lakes, reinforcing China’s commitment to environmental sustainability. These initiatives reflect a balanced approach to advancing clean energy, social welfare, and ecological conservation.
