Total Energies’ Antwerp Platform to Reconfigure Petrochemicals Operations

Total Energies’ Antwerp platform, a cornerstone of its operations for over 75 years, has announced plans to enhance its petrochemical operations to boost efficiency and sustainability. Located in Belgium, this integrated refining and petrochemicals facility is designed to maintain operational resilience through a cohesive business model.

Total Energies’ Antwerp platform provides an update on its investments for the future and announces plan to reconfigure its petrochemicals operations.

“We are committed to ensuring the long-term viability of our Antwerp site through strategic investments and adaptations,” said Ann Veraverbeke, Managing Director of Total Energies Antwerp. “By reconfiguring the platform, we aim to keep it as Total Energies’ most efficient in Europe, supporting job preservation and addressing market demands while advancing sustainability goals.”

To accelerate its environmental efforts, the Antwerp platform is prioritizing decarbonization. Total Energies has partnered with Air Liquide on a 200 MW electrolyzer project, securing 130 MW for producing 15,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. Supported by green electricity from the Oranjewind offshore wind project, this initiative, set to launch by late 2027, will cut CO2 emissions at the site by up to 150,000 tons per year. This aligns with European renewable energy goals for the transport sector.

The platform is also expanding into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production to support the aviation industry’s shift toward lower carbon emissions. Starting in 2025, Antwerp will produce 50,000 tons of SAF annually through coprocessing, a method that integrates hydrocarbons and biomass in existing refining units. This project will help aviation customers reduce their environmental impact.

Through these efforts, Total Energies aims to strengthen the Antwerp platform’s role as a leader in efficient and sustainable energy production while contributing to broader environmental objectives.
