Japan’s Toyo Begins Production at 2 GW Solar Cell Plant in Ethiopia

Toyo, a Tokyo-based solar company, has launched production at its new 2 GW solar cell manufacturing facility in Hawassa, Ethiopia. The plant, which began operations in April 2025, is set to produce over 80 MW of solar cells by the end of the month. The facility is expected to reach full capacity by May or June, delivering 150 MW to 200 MW monthly.

Specializing in TOPCon solar cell technology, Toyo announced the construction of the Hawassa factory in October 2024, primarily to meet demand in the U.S. market. The project was supported by an initial investment of $60 million. The company has since outlined plans to double the plant’s capacity to 4 GW, driven by strong market demand and the needs of its new module manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas.

“2025 is shaping up to be a year of massive growth,” said Toyo CEO and Chairman Junsei Ryu. “We are very positive about the strong demand we are seeing in the market and are working diligently to execute the additional 2 GW expansion in Ethiopia.”

Toyo’s decision to establish the factory in Ethiopia reflects a strategic effort to diversify its manufacturing base and capitalize on regional opportunities. The move supports the company’s goal of expanding its global presence while meeting the growing need for renewable energy solutions.

The Hawassa facility is poised to strengthen Toyo’s position in the solar industry, contributing to the global supply of high-efficiency solar cells. By leveraging Ethiopia’s strategic location and economic advantages, Toyo aims to enhance its production capabilities and support sustainable energy development.
