RWE Starts Work on German Wind Farm

24 Apr 2025  by renews
RWE, a leading energy company, is advancing its onshore wind energy portfolio in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. Near the village of Papenhagen, close to Grimmen in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, RWE is constructing four wind turbines with a combined capacity of 22.8 MW. Construction began following a successful bid in the Federal Network Agency’s auction at the end of last year, with commissioning scheduled for mid-2026. Once operational, the wind farm is expected to supply green electricity to approximately 20,000 households.

In addition to the four turbines, RWE is building a fifth wind turbine nearby to support a project partner’s operations. This expansion strengthens the region’s renewable energy infrastructure and contributes to sustainable energy production.

Katja Wünschel, chief executive of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said: “We are continuing to accelerate the expansion of wind energy in Germany and expanding our wind fleet in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The local people also benefit from this. We voluntarily pay 0.2 cents per kilowatt hour produced to the surrounding municipalities. For the wind farm near Papenhagen, this is expected revenues of up to €130,000 per year.”

The financial contribution to local municipalities highlights RWE’s commitment to supporting the communities near its projects. The annual payments will provide a steady revenue stream, fostering local development while promoting clean energy.

This wind farm project aligns with Germany’s broader goals to increase renewable energy capacity. By harnessing wind power in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, RWE is helping to meet the region’s energy needs with sustainable solutions. The Papenhagen wind farm will play a key role in reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources, offering reliable and environmentally friendly electricity to thousands of households.

RWE’s efforts in the region demonstrate the growing importance of wind energy in achieving energy sustainability. The project not only enhances the local energy grid but also sets an example of how renewable energy initiatives can deliver both environmental and economic benefits to communities.
