Australian Pork Consumption Set to Hit Record High in 2025 – USDA FAS

22 Apr 2025
Australia’s pork consumption is projected to reach a record 660,000 metric tons (carcass weight equivalent) in 2025, up from an estimated 649,000 metric tons in 2024, according to a report by the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. This growth reflects the country’s increasing demand for pork, driven by key economic and demographic factors.

The primary driver of this rise is population growth, as per capita pork consumption has remained steady over the past decade. While factors such as meat prices, cost-of-living pressures, and disruptions from the pandemic have caused minor fluctuations, pork remains a staple in Australian diets. The report highlights that improving economic conditions in 2025 are expected to further support this upward trend in consumption.

Although minor avian influenza outbreaks occurred in the past year, they have not significantly affected poultry production. However, any future disruptions to the chicken supply could potentially increase demand for pork as an alternative protein source. Currently, no significant obstacles are anticipated that would hinder the growth of pork consumption in Australia.

Sarah Mitchell, a senior analyst at the Australian Meat Industry Council, stated: “Pork’s consistent popularity, combined with population growth and easing economic pressures, positions it well for record consumption in 2025.” The stability of pork’s market share underscores its importance to Australian consumers.

The domestic pork industry is well-prepared to meet this rising demand, with production and supply chains operating efficiently. The absence of major disruptions ensures that pork remains accessible and affordable, supporting its continued presence in households across the country.

Australia’s growing appetite for pork reflects broader trends in food consumption, where population dynamics and economic factors play a significant role. The projected record consumption in 2025 highlights the resilience of the pork sector and its ability to adapt to changing market conditions while maintaining consumer confidence.
