Rio Tinto, AMG Metals & Materials to Explore Low-Carbon Aluminium Project

21 Apr 2025  by process-worldwide.
Rio Tinto, a global mining company, and AMG Metals & Materials (AMG M&M), an energy transition solutions provider founded by Greenko and AM Green leaders, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to evaluate the feasibility of a low-carbon aluminium project in India. The collaboration aims to develop a project powered by renewable energy sources, including wind and solar, supported by pumped hydro storage.

Rio Tinto and AMG M&M have signed a MOU to jointly assess the feasibility of developing an integrated low-carbon aluminium project powered by renewable energy in India.

The initiative includes a study to assess the potential for a 1 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) primary aluminium smelter and 2 Mtpa of alumina production. The first phase will explore a 500,000 tonnes per annum aluminium smelter at a suitable location in India. The project seeks to leverage India’s economic growth and strategic position to produce sustainable aluminium.

Jérôme Pécresse, Rio Tinto Aluminium Chief Executive, stated: “This study is an important step in our ambition to grow our global, low-carbon aluminium footprint while exploring new project delivery approaches and opportunities in emerging markets. Partnering with AMG Metals & Materials enables us to assess how we can develop low-cost responsible aluminium production powered by renewable energy. With its rapid economic growth and strategic position, India is a compelling location for this potential project and aligns with our long-term vision for a globally more diverse and resilient aluminium business.”

The study will involve AMG M&M collaborating with Greenko to develop a reliable renewable energy solution, while Rio Tinto will focus on securing a viable alumina supply. Additionally, the parties will evaluate smelting technology options to identify the most cost-effective approach for the project.

Mahesh Kolli, Group President of AMG Metals & Materials and Greenko, said: “Over the last few years, we have been able to deliver a multitude of decarbonization solutions comprising electricity, molecules, chemicals and fuels. We are excited to expand that further to the materials space. This MOU could deliver much needed low-carbon metal at scale to propel decarbonization initiatives in global supply chains across auto, construction, consumer packaging and many more segments.”

This partnership aims to support sustainable industrial growth by producing low-carbon aluminium, contributing to decarbonization efforts across various industries while enhancing India’s role in the global clean energy transition.
