The first concrete pouring ceremony was attended virtually by representatives from the Belarusian NPP, El Dabaa NPP in Egypt, and Rooppur NPP in Bangladesh. These nations operate or are developing power units with Russian VVER-1200 reactors, supported by Rosatom. During the event, nuclear experts from these partner countries provided updates on their respective projects for 2024 and expressed support for the successful completion of the new units at Leningrad NPP-2.
Andrey Petrov, First Deputy Director General for Nuclear Energy at Rosatom and President of ASE JSC, Rosatom’s Engineering Division, highlighted the broader significance of the project: “This is not just the start of a new unit construction at the Leningrad NPP-2. This is another step towards the major national goal of increasing the share of peaceful nuclear energy in the national energy mix.” He outlined Rosatom’s upcoming initiatives, including the construction of replacement power facilities at Smolensk and Kola NPPs later in 2025, as well as the completion of engineering surveys for a fourth-generation unit at Beloyarsk NPP in the Sverdlovsk region. Petrov also noted plans for new nuclear projects over the next two decades in Siberia, the Ural region, and the Far East, which will enhance access to clean energy for Russian citizens.
The ceremony underscored Rosatom’s commitment to advancing nuclear energy infrastructure, both domestically and in collaboration with international partners. The Leningrad NPP-2 project, alongside other planned developments, reflects ongoing efforts to modernize and expand sustainable energy solutions, contributing to regional and national energy goals.
