Located on a 1,000-acre site where the Calcasieu Ship Channel meets the Gulf of Mexico, the Calcasieu Pass project is designed to export 10 mtpa of LNG. The facility, completed in under 68 months from its final investment decision in August 2019, ranks among the fastest greenfield LNG projects. “I am incredibly proud of our team who have worked relentlessly and diligently to successfully construct and commission our first LNG project,” said Mike Sabel, Venture Global CEO. “We are excited to reach this milestone and are grateful for our regulators and supply chain partners who have worked with our team to reach commercial operations as efficiently and safely as possible.”
The project’s modular design, featuring mid-scale liquefaction trains, enabled it to navigate challenges such as a global pandemic, hurricanes, and manufacturing issues with the power island. Extensive remediation ensures the facility’s safety and reliability, with a safety record surpassing the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ heavy construction industry average. Long-term contracts, with liquefaction fees averaging under $2/mmbtu, provide competitive pricing for customers over 20 years. “The successful delivery of this first cargo reinforces Galp’s natural gas & LNG position, diversifying and adding flexibility to its portfolio,” said a Galp representative.
Venture Global’s Calcasieu Pass facility began producing LNG in January 2022, followed by its Plaquemines LNG project in December 2024. The company’s third project, CP2 LNG, received a positive final environmental impact statement from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in July 2023, with a draft supplemental environmental impact statement recently issued. Venture Global is developing over 100 mtpa of production capacity and integrating carbon capture and sequestration at its facilities.
The Calcasieu Pass project supports long-term contracts with global customers, contributing to economic benefits through LNG exports. It highlights Venture Global’s focus on efficient, safe, and sustainable LNG production, strengthening its position in the international energy market.
