Background and Expansion

Since 2016, Coriance has operated the city’s first geothermal plant and heating network, serving the Mordacs and Bois l’Abbé districts in eastern Champigny-sur-Marne. In 2018, plans were announced to extend geothermal heating to more areas of the city. In 2019, the Campinois Public Geothermal Establishment selected Coriance to develop a second heating network to enhance access to sustainable energy for residents.

Construction of the new network started in 2022, creating 9.2 kilometers of additional infrastructure. Drilling for a geothermal doublet began in February 2023, targeting the Dogger Formation at a depth of 1,800 meters. This process took approximately four months. Construction of the new plant followed, lasting about one year.

Impact and Operations

By September 2024, the second geothermal heating network began supplying energy to 5,000 homes in Champigny-sur-Marne. This initiative reduces carbon emissions by 9,500 tonnes annually, equivalent to removing 7,900 cars from the roads. “This plant represents a significant step toward sustainable energy for our community,” said a Coriance spokesperson during the inauguration.

The facility uses groundwater to produce heat, offering an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional heating systems. The public exhibitions aim to educate residents about geothermal energy and its benefits.

Regional Developments

Coriance is also expanding geothermal heating in other parts of the Greater Paris region. Drilling has started in Alfortville to enhance local heating networks. Additionally, a new geothermal facility is under development in Garges-lès-Gonesse, further supporting the region’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Commitment to Sustainability

The Champigny-sur-Marne project reflects Coriance’s focus on providing reliable, eco-friendly heating. By leveraging geothermal resources, the company contributes to reducing reliance on fossil fuels while meeting the energy needs of urban communities. The second plant strengthens the city’s infrastructure, ensuring more households benefit from clean energy.

The successful launch of this facility highlights the potential of geothermal energy to support sustainable urban development. Coriance’s ongoing efforts in the Île-de-France region demonstrate a practical approach to addressing environmental challenges while enhancing residents’ quality of life.
