India Adds 25 GW of Solar in 2024

27 Feb 2025  by pv magazine
India achieved another milestone in its solar energy mission in 2024, installing 25.2 GW of solar capacity, marking a significant leap from the 8.3 GW added in 2023. This 204% increase underscores the nation's progress in harnessing solar power, with large-scale solar projects surging to new heights.

Of the total installations, over 87% (22 GW) were from open-access projects, which include commercial and industrial solar, while rooftop solar contributed nearly 13% (3.27 GW). Large-scale solar projects surged by nearly 235%, reaching 22 GW, a remarkable rise from 6.6 GW in 2023.

Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra led the charge, contributing approximately 32%, 27%, and 8% of the large-scale capacity additions, respectively. Despite the progress, challenges such as transmission issues and supply chain bottlenecks remain, highlighting the need for stable policies to support solar growth.

With over 35 GW of annual solar additions required by 2030, the industry faces the challenge of balancing local manufacturing with seamless project development. The total capacity additions for 2024 stood at 34.7 GW, with solar accounting for nearly 73% of the total.

India's solar sector continues to shine, but the path forward requires clear policies and addressing the hurdles faced to ensure sustained growth and meet its energy goals.
