Salak geothermal power plant, Indonesia
Star Energy Geothermal, a subsidiary of Barito Renewables, has just announced the successful completion of the 72-hour commissioning test of the Salak binary geothermal power plant in West Java, Indonesia. During the test, the binary power plant sustained a 15.5-MW gross capacity production, which is higher than the developer initially expected.
“We would like to thank all stakeholders and teams who have supported this project,” said Barito Renewables President Director Hendra Tan, quoting from the company’s official statement.
Star Energy Geothermal had contracted Ormat Technologies to deliver the power plant back in 2021. Several COD targets were announced since then, first in 2022, and then by the end of 2023. Despite the setbacks, it is tremendously good news that the binary power plant is now fully operational.
With this development, the total installed geothermal power capacity of Star Energy Geothermal has now increased to 901.5 MW, making it one of the largest geothermal power operators in the world. In 2016, Star Energy Geothermal acquired the geothermal assets of Chevron in Indonesia, which included the Salak and Darajat operating fields.
The company is resolute in strengthening its position in the geothermal power industry, having recently entered into a partnership with SLB on optimizing geothermal operations and technological innovations, and with Kyndryl to integrate AI technologies into their operational activities.
