A delegation from the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) visited the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) to meet with key government stakeholders and explore the possibility of a partnership for the geothermal project based in Nevis.

The SFD team met with SKN Minister of Infrastructure Konris Maynard and other government officials during the visit. “[The] Saudi Fund Development Team is on our beautiful twin island to analyse first-hand the feasibility of the project and to meet with a number of Key Government stakeholders as we map out the way forward to make Geothermal a reality,” said Minisiter Maynard.

In December 2022, NIA and the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis announced a tender for the drilling of three production wells and two reinjection wells to support a potential 10-MW development, with funding from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). The bidding period had to be extended twice, owing to the massive show of interest that the tender attracted, before being officially closed on April 2023.

In a more recent development, members of the National Assembly of St. Kitts and Nevis unanimously voted in favor of a resolution that outlines the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis’ and the Nevis Island Administration’s (NIA) commitment to collaboratively pursue the development of geothermal energy on Nevis.

At the COP28 in Dubai, SKN delegation member Mr. Ian Ward presented a roadmap for the geothermal project. The plan includes the development not just of the geothermal power project, but also a 66-kV transmission system that will cover each island to allow for distribution of sustainable and reliable baseload power.

The road map outlines several phases for the project, as well as estimated costs and target completion date. The cumulative cost for the entire geothermal project is estimated at USD 505 million. The last phase of the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
