Pattern Energy has dedicated its 150MW Lanfine wind farm in Special Area No 3 in the town of Oyen, Alberta province, Canada.

Built with a total investment of C$335m ($245.2m), this farm is powered by 35 Vestas V150–4.3 MW turbines. Pattern Energy placed the order for the turbines in September 2021.

250 jobs were created during the construction period and the project will create seven to ten permanent jobs during its lifetime.

The power will be sold under a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to West Fraser, a Canadian timber company.

The timber company will power 50% of its operations with clean energy as part of its commitment to achieving a 46.2% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

The wind farm will also bring tax revenues for the local community.

Construction began in the first quarter of 2021 and operations commenced in July 2023.

Pattern Energy CEO Hunter Armistead stated: “Lanfine Wind is a C$335m investment in Alberta that is bringing diverse economic benefits to the region while powering 30,000 homes with clean and renewable energy.

“We’re proud to have committed C$1m to the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta that will go directly to supporting critical local causes and initiatives. Together, we are building a better, cleaner and more sustainable future in Alberta.”

In September 2023, Pattern Energy broke ground on its SunZia Transmission project, a high-voltage direct current link that can carry 3.5GW of wind power from New Mexico to Arizona.
