FPL Pilot Project to Produce Electricity With Hydrogen

13 Oct 2023  by energynews

Florida Power & Light (FPL) has unveiled a pilot project to produce electricity using clean hydrogen from a facility in Okeechobee County.

The project, called the “FPL Cavendish NextGen Hydrogen Hub,” uses water and solar to create the clean hydrogen that is then blended with natural gas to generate electricity.

FPL is working to decarbonize its power generation infrastructure by no later than 2045. Hydrogen is a promising clean energy source that could help FPL achieve this goal.

The FPL Cavendish NextGen Hydrogen Hub uses electrolysis to produce clean hydrogen. Electrolysis is a process that uses electricity to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. FPL will use solar power to power the electrolysis process. This will ensure that the hydrogen produced is clean and carbon-free. The clean hydrogen will then be blended with natural gas to generate electricity. This will help to reduce the carbon footprint of FPL’s power generation.

If successful, the FPL Cavendish NextGen Hydrogen Hub could have a number of positive impacts. First, it could help FPL to achieve its goal of decarbonizing its power generation infrastructure. Second, it could save FPL customers money on their power bills. Hydrogen is a relatively inexpensive fuel, and blending it with natural gas could help to reduce the cost of electricity generation. Third, the project could help to create jobs in the clean energy sector.

The FPL Cavendish NextGen Hydrogen Hub is a promising pilot project that could help to accelerate the development of the hydrogen industry and support the transition to a clean energy future.
