The China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec) has started the drilling of a geothermal scientific exploration well in the city of Haikou, the capital of the southern Hainan province. With a target depth of 5000 meters, the well will potentially be the deepest geothermal well in China.

The aim of the geothermal exploration well will be to better characterize the subsurface formation in the region, as well as the potential of geothermal resources in the surrounding area. Sinopec aims to lead the development of geothermal resources exploration and technology and enable large-scale geothermal development in hot dry rocks.

Citing data from the China Geological Survey, Sinopec stated that the hot dry rock resources in China is equivalent to 856 trillion tonnes of standard coal, or 3200 times of the country’s annual energy consumption in 2022.

As China’s largest geothermal development and utilization company, Sinopec has a cumulative geothermal heating capacity of over 80 million square meters as of the end of 2022. We had previously reported on Sinopec’s plans to triple its geothermal heating capacity to 120 to 150 million square meters by 2023.

Sinopec is the host of the upcoming World Geothermal Congress 2023 to be held in Beijing, China. The triennial conference is the premier global event convening the leaders of industry, academia, the finance sector, governments, NGOs, and communities to collaborate and provide thoughtful solutions for a sustainable society.
