The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security has begun the authorization process for two new Terna underground cable power lines in Olgiate Olona, Solbiate Olona, Gorla Minore, and Gorla Maggiore, Varese province.

Led by Giuseppina Di Foggia, the company will invest €10 million ($11 million) in the project. It involves creating two 132 kV cable connections spanning 6 km to supply local distributor primary cabins. This infrastructure will replace 5.5 km of overhead power lines and 26 pylons, freeing up 16 hectares of land.

The project is part of Terna’s “Resilience Plan” to mitigate climate change effects. It aims to reduce disconnections in the local grid and prevent damage from ice and snow. Weather events have necessitated increased grid meshing and underground connections for greater operational security.

At the regional level, Terna manages 8,400 km of power lines and 135 electricity substations. In its 2023 Development Plan, the company has allocated €1.3 billion ($1.42 billion) for Lombardy over the next 10 years, making it the primary investment destination in Northern Italy.
