28 Apr 2023  by world energy

According to reports, the Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation Rosatom participated in the China International Nuclear Industry Exhibition (CIENPI) held in Beijing, China on April 26, 2023. Rosatom representatives, including Eduard Nikitin, the retired project director of TVEL JSC, were interviewed by the World Energy Network during the event, discussing the latest nuclear fuel cycle technology - the FREMES system - and the company's close cooperation with China in this field.

The Rosatom representative first introduced the company's FREMES system, a technology that improves the efficiency of nuclear fuel cycles. The FREMES system can recover and reuse unutilized nuclear fuel and burning substances in nuclear power plants, thereby increasing fuel utilization and reducing the production of nuclear waste. This technology has broad applications in nuclear fuel recycling, nuclear fuel post-treatment, and nuclear fuel storage.

In terms of cooperation with China, the Rosatom representative stated that the two countries have already conducted multiple collaborations, particularly in the field of nuclear fuel cycle technology. Rosatom will promote the FREMES system in China and further develop an upgraded version of the technology in collaboration with China. In addition, both sides will explore the application of the FREMES system to solve the problems of nuclear waste treatment and the safe handling of radioactive materials.

The Rosatom representative emphasized that cooperation between Russia and China in the energy sector is long-term, mutually beneficial, and has high strategic value. Rosatom will continue to strengthen its cooperation with China in the nuclear and related fields and provide the world with advanced nuclear technology and the highest quality nuclear fuel cycle technology, thereby promoting the development of the global nuclear energy industry.

Overall, in this interview, Rosatom showcased its research and development achievements in the latest nuclear fuel cycle technology and expressed the importance of the long-term cooperation between Russia and China in the energy sector. Rosatom will continue to strengthen its cooperation with China to bring more benefits for both sides and provide the world with the highest quality nuclear technology and services.
