Construction for the planned expansion of the geothermal district heating network in the municipality of Grünwald in Germany has officially started with a groundbreaking ceremony. The aim of the project is to expand north of the Grünwald district heating network with a 4.7-kilometer-long transmission line. Construction work is expected to last until December.

Plans for the expansion of the district heating network in Grunwald had been announced in mid-2022. In early 2023, utility Erdwärme Grünwald (EWG) announced that permits have been filed for the construction of an interconnection line from the Laufzorn location across the Grünwald forests and to the site of the Bavaria Filmstadt theme park.

With the increased demand for geothermal heating, part of the program is to drill additional wells for two doublets and construct a new heating plant. The approval for the Laufzorn II location was granted in December 2022. EWG currently operates a district heating network with a length of around 100 kilometers and an installed connection capacity of 70 MW.

In a prior statement, EWG Geothermal Manager Andreas Lerle said that at least 150 connections are optimistically expected to be completed this year. In 2022, EWG already had to increase the number of new geothermal connections from the planned 100 to 150.

Construction will be done in five sections, starting from Linienstraße in Oberhaching. As soon as a construction site has been completed and the pipes have been laid, the section is filled and the next construction site is processed. The forest and cycle paths affected by the construction will be restored, and trees will also be reforested. All construction stages will be under ecological construction supervision to ensure nature conservation.
