The Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS) has announced that earlier this month it had inaugurated its third hydroelectric dam – the 140MW Gouina dam project.

Located in the district of Diamou, the project was inaugurated on 3 December in a ceremony co-chaired by Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga, Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Mali, Mr. Amadou Ba, Prime Minister of Senegal, Mr. Mohamed Bilal Messaoud, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and Mr. Bernard Gomou, Prime Minister of the Republic of Guinea

Constructed upstream from Kayes, work began on the run-of-river power plant back in November 2016. The project has already been supplying electricity for several months as it was connected to the electricity network of Mali, the Mauritania and Senegal last March.

The project, which follows on from the Manantali and Felou dams, was built by Chinese firm Sinohydro. More than 80% of the project was funded by Eximbank of China.
