Enel Green Power Brasil Participacoes Ltda (EGP Brasil) has commenced the commercial operation of its 206-MW Cumaru wind farm in Brazil's Rio Grande do Norte state.

The execution of the project required an investment of some BRL 948 million (USD 167.4m/EUR 143.8m), the company announced on Wednesday.

Located in the municipality of Sao Miguel do Gostoso, the wind farm is equipped with 49 turbines that can generate more than 966 GWh per year and offset some 543,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emmissions annually.

Cumaru is part of a 1.1-GW renewable energy portfolio the company is currently building in Brazil's Northeastern region, comprised of four wind parks and one solar plant, the local arm of Italian major Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) said.

At present, Enel has around 4 GW of installed capacity in Brazil, of which some 1.6 GW comes from wind, 1.1 GW from solar and roughly 1.3 GW from hydro sources.
