Wpd Orders 5.7MW Nordex Turbines for Large Finnish Wind Farm

Wpd places 188MW order in Finland with the Nordex Group for turbines to supply electricity to paper company UPM through a corporate PPA

Developer wpd has placed an order with the Nordex Group for 33 turbines for the 188MW Karhunnevankangas project in Finland.

It is expected that the wind farm in the north of Ostrobothnia in western Finland will be installed and completed by the end of 2022.

The turbines will use a project-specific operating mode of 5.7MW, giving the wind farm a total capacity of 188MW.

Paper company UPM will buy output from an unspecified portion of the project through a corporate power purchase agreement (PPA).IFrame

In a first, the Nordex Group will install the turbines with tubular steel towers with a hub height of 159 metres and rotor blade tip height of 240 metres.

The set up means that the turbines will reach higher wind strata at the coastal location, with less turbulence at the site.

Patxi Landa, CSO of the Nordex Group said: “The N163/5.X is ideally suited to sites with medium wind speeds and is a highly efficient solution for this project site on Finland's west coast.

“We are pleased to note the renewed trust shown by wpd in our turbine technology and that here we are able to install it on tubular steel towers with hub heights of just under 160 metres.”

The Nordex Group has installed more than 30GW of wind energy in more than 40 markets.

wpd AG develops and operates wind farms onshore and offshore as well as solar parks, and has implemented wind energy projects with around 2,270 wind turbines and a capacity of 4,720MW.

Its project pipeline includes 11.GW of onshore wind onshore and 7.4GW of offshore wind.
