Strabag Oman LLC, a subsidiary of Strabag International GmbH, has been awarded contracts for two new flood protection dams in the Muscat Governorate.

The contracts for the Al Jifnain and Al Jufainah dams were awarded by the Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries Wealth & Water Resources and are valued at around €165 million.

The Al Jifnain flood protection dam is located next to the Sultan Qaboos University in Al Seeb. The dam is intended to protect the area from floods and avoid loss of lives and infrastructure destruction. It consists of a main rockfill embankment, two ungated concrete chute spillways and retaining walls, two intake towers and bottom outlets and a monitoring system. The contract value amounts to €93.6 million and is scheduled for 32 months, with work having started at the beginning of November.

The Al Jufainah dam is located in the southern part of Al Amerat-Quryat highway in a rugged landscape where an extensive urban development area is planned. It is intended that the dam intercept flood waters coming from the southern wadis flowing in the bowl and joining at the Aday Gorge upstream entrance. The total length of the scheme is about 2.66km and it comprises of seven individual rockfill/earthfill dams with associated hydraulic structures; a main dam with associated two service spillways and their associated tailrace channels, a lateral dam with a service spillway and five saddle dams. The contract value here amounts to (€ 71.6 million). The contract duration is scheduled for 29 months and it also started at the beginning of November.

Strabag has already constructed several flood-protection schemes in the Sultanate of Oman like the Salalah Dam, the Flood Protection Scheme at Al Amerat Heights as well as the Flood Protection Scheme at Wilayat Sur.
