Finnish state-owned gas company Gasum has agreed a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with ABO Wind to sell renewable wind power to the domestic market.
The ten-year agreement will see Gasum sell renewable wind power produced in North Ostrobothnia to its Finnish customers commencing in 2023. A 9-turbine wind farm with a total output capacity of approximately 40 megawatts (MW) will be built by ABO Wind in Kestilän Kokkoneva in North Ostrobothnia.
Gasum stated that it anticipates purchasing approximately 10 gigwatts (GW) of energy per annum through the agreement with ABO Wind. According to Gasum, the deal will increase the availability of renewable Finnish energy and the nation’s wind power capacity, in turn raising Finland’s self-sufficiency in electricity generation.
The PPA forms part of Gasum’s strategy for increasing the renewable share of Finland’s energy mix, alongside the sale of electricity generated from solar, hydro and bioenergy.
“Thanks to Gasum’s long-term commitment, we have a solid financial basis for realising our project Kokkoneva. The remuneration system in Finland has changed and PPAs provide us with the opportunity to plan, finance and build wind farms under the new conditions,” said Aapo Koivuniemi, managing director of ABO Wind.
Earlier this month, Gasum secured a new deal with Norwegian steel manufacturer Celsa Armeringsstål AS for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the construction of a customer terminal in the Mo Industrial Park, located in Mo i Rana. [See related story]
