PG&E to Develop 423 MW of Calif. Battery Storage

21 May 2020  by Kallanish Energy
Pacific Gas & Electric Co. intends to develop five lithium-ion energy storage projects totaling 423 megawatts by 2021 in California, Kallanish Energy reports.

The utility, seeking to emerge from Chapter 11 reorganization after deadly 2017 and 2018 wildfires, made a filing earlier this week with the California Public Utilities Commission.

The projects are designed to further integrate clean energy from renewable sources while ensuring future reliability of the electric system, the company said.

The agreements for the projects are a result of a competitive request for offers that PG&E had launched last February, following a directive last fall from state regulators that identified potential reliability issues beginning in 2021.

PG&E was authorized to procure at least 716.9 megawatts of system reliability resources to come online from mid-2021 to mid-2023.

The five battery storage projects represent PG&E’s first phase of procurement.

The company will issue Phase 2 competitive solicitations this summer for resources to come online from mid-2022 to mid-2023.

The five projects are Diablo Energy Storage, a 150-megawatt facility in Contra Costa County, Vistra Energy’s 100-megawatt Moss Landing in Monterey County, Gateway Energy Storage’s 50-megawatt facility in San Diego, NextEra Resources’ 63-megawatt Blythe Energy Storage in Riverside County and Coso Battery Storage’s 60-megawatt facility in Inyo County.

All five projects are to begin service by August 2021.

The five projects are either co-located with solar or geothermal plants or will be built as new storage projects.

As of May 2020, PG&E has awarded contracts for battery storage projects totaling more than 1,000 megawatts to be deployed through 2023.
