Eni has made a gas and condensate discovery in its Ken Bau prospect offshore Vietnam with a significant hydrocarbon potential, the Italian oil major said Wednesday.

Located in block 114 in the Song Hong Basin, exploration well Ken Bau 1X encountering several intervals of gas and condensate sandstone source rocks with a net reservoir thickness in excess of 100 meters."Ken Bau 1X results represent a significant breakthrough for evaluating the exploration potential in the Song Hong Basin," Eni said in a statement, adding that "The well resultindicates a significant potential of the hydrocarbon accumulation."

Eni said the exploration well was plugged and abandoned before reaching target depths due to "technical issues" leaving further target rock for future testing that "could hold significant additional resources." The company said it is already planning a drilling campaign early next year to assess the upside of the discovery fully.

Eni operates Block 114 with a 50% share and is partnered by India's Essar with the remaining 50%. Eni also operates the neighboring Block 116 in the Song Hong basin with a 100% interest.
