Alphabet Inc. and Voltus, Inc. announced a three-year partnership on Tuesday to make up to 100 megawatts of additional electricity capacity available across the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection (PJM) power market, which serves roughly 67 million people in the United States.
The initiative will use devices such as batteries and internet-connected thermostats to lower electricity consumption during periods of peak demand. Voltus will manage the program, while households and businesses that participate will receive financial compensation for reducing their energy use.
Google said the project is designed to improve grid reliability and support growing electricity needs, including those tied to data centers. Google added that "U.S. consumers could save more than $100 billion over the next decade" through similar solutions and said it is working toward "a more robust, clean, and affordable energy system."
