Coal India's May Output Falls 4.1%

02 Jun 2026

Coal India Ltd., the world's largest coal miner, reported a decline in production for May 2026, signaling a shift in the country's energy landscape as it accelerates investments in renewable power.

Output at the state-run behemoth fell to 64.2 million tons last month, down 4.1% from a year earlier, according to preliminary data released by the company. The drop comes amid a broader government push to reduce the economy's reliance on fossil fuels and meet ambitious climate targets.

While coal still accounts for about 70% of India's electricity generation, the share of renewable energy has been rising steadily. The government aims to have 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, a target that is driving rapid solar and wind installations across the country.
