US utility Avangrid said on May 27 it has secured Microsoft Corp as the power off-taker of its 100-MWac/140-MWdc Bluebird solar project in Washington.
The power purchase agreement (PPA) is the fourth such deal between the two companies, taking the overall contracted capacity to more than 500 MW.
Avangrid, part of Spanish utility group Iberdrola SA, will install the Bluebird solar farm in Klickitat County, in proximity to four other plants it owns and operates in the county. Calling for an investment of USD 300 million (EUR 258.9m), the plant is slated to begin commercial operations in 2028. Its annual output is estimated to be enough to cover the demand of more than 20,000 homes.
Microsoft is already procuring green power from Avangrid’s Powell Creek solar park in Ohio and the Camino complex in California, both of which were commissioned last year. The tech group has also pledged to source electricity from the Juniper Canyon wind project in Washington, which Avangrid expects to energise this year.
