ABB Advances Electrification, Automation at Boliden’s Aitik Copper Facility

20 Dec 2025  by mining-technology
ABB has enhanced the electrification and automation systems at Boliden's Aitik copper mine, located south of Gällivare in northern Sweden. This upgrade supports the expansion of one of Europe's significant tailings storage facilities, enabling safer and more effective operations at Sweden's largest open-pit copper mine.

Atik is the largest open-pit copper mine in Sweden.

The improved infrastructure focuses on advancing water storage, recycling, and monitoring functions. These enhancements allow the mine to increase production capacity in response to growing worldwide need for refined copper. According to the International Energy Agency's Stated Policies Scenario, global demand for refined copper is projected to increase by approximately 22% by 2035.

Boliden continues to implement responsible mining approaches at Aitik, emphasizing effective tailings management with a focus on safety and compliance with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management.

ABB provided modular, quickly installable electrification and control technologies tailored for the challenging sub-arctic conditions in northern Sweden. The solution includes prefabricated e-houses, medium- and low-voltage switchgear, transformers, variable speed drives for pump stations, and the ABB Ability System 800xA distributed control system for centralized oversight.

These components enable unified control of power distribution, predictive alerts for maintenance, and immediate diagnostic information. Such features prove vital for overseeing facility integrity and minimizing interruptions amid varying operational demands.

"Boliden needed future-proofed infrastructure to keep pace with increased demand for European copper production. Our modular approach allowed us to quickly deliver electrified and automated operations, without compromising on quality or safety standards.

"By combining our deep mining expertise with advanced technology, Boliden's Aitik mine sets a new standard for how electrical systems can support both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility," said Björn Jonsson, global business line manager for mining and materials in ABB's Process Industries division.

This project underscores the value of integrated digital and electrical solutions in modern mining. By optimizing energy use and automating key processes, the upgrade contributes to reliable performance while addressing resource management needs.

In a separate development earlier in 2025, ABB and Epiroc entered into a memorandum of understanding to further joint efforts on underground trolley systems for mining applications.

These advancements highlight ongoing industry progress toward efficient, resilient operations that align with long-term material supply requirements.
