Saudi Arabia Launches Bidding for 13,000 Sq KM Mineral Exploration Licences

02 Dec 2025  by Reuters
Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources announced on Monday the launch of a new bidding round for three exploration licences covering approximately 13,000 square kilometres. The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to develop the country's mineral sector, which holds estimated resources valued at 9.4 trillion riyals (around $2.50 trillion).

The three licence areas are located across several regions, including Madinah, Makkah, Riyadh, Qassim, and Hail. They encompass newly identified mineral belts considered prospective for deposits of gold, silver, copper, zinc, and lead. The sites have been selected following detailed geological studies to maximise exploration potential.

Interested companies are invited to participate in the competitive tender process. The ministry stated that the licences will be awarded based on technical capability, financial strength, and proposed work programmes. Full details of the bidding requirements, site data packages, and submission deadlines are available through the official mining portal.

This round represents the latest step in Saudi Arabia's strategy to expand its mining industry and attract international investment. By offering large, well-defined exploration areas, the kingdom aims to accelerate the discovery and development of mineral deposits that can support economic diversification objectives.

The ministry emphasised that the selected sites benefit from existing infrastructure and proximity to regional centres, which should facilitate efficient exploration activities. Successful bidders will be required to adhere to environmental standards and local content guidelines throughout the licence period.

Further announcements regarding additional licence rounds and updates on previously awarded sites are expected in the coming months as the ministry continues to make new opportunities available to the global mining community.
