Port of Hamburg Appoints New Executive Board Member

09 Nov 2025  by porttechnology.
The Supervisory Board of Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM) has named economist Hendrik Meyn as a new Executive Board Member, creating a dual leadership structure alongside Axel Mattern.

Meyn assumed his position on November 1, 2025. He previously served as Director of Group Brand and Marketing at the Harren Group, managing corporate restructuring and international market strategies.

Volker Werner, Chairman of HHM’s Supervisory Board, said: “With Hendrik Meyn, we have gained an expert in the maritime industry for the HHM Executive Board. His professional experience and marketing expertise will be a valuable addition to HHM. His knowledge perfectly complements the work of Axel Mattern, who has led the Board alone for the past three and a half years.”

HHM CEO Axel Mattern added: “I look forward to working with Hendrik Meyn. Together, we will use our expertise, experience and network to strengthen the port’s presence in global markets. This will enable us to enhance our marketing activities at home and abroad and to respond more effectively to changing demands.”

Meyn said: “The port is the heart of the Hamburg metropolitan region and a symbol of the city’s global connection. I am excited to work with Axel Mattern to drive new initiatives and further position the port and its partners as strong and innovative players in the global network.”

Prior to the Harren Group, where he spent more than four years, Meyn worked as a management consultant specializing in energy, industrial, and manufacturing sectors.

At the TECHRITORY Conference held in Riga, Latvia, on October 22, 2025, Antonia Kuntze from Flotte Hamburg presented the Port of Hamburg’s adoption of digital technologies to boost operational efficiency, safety, and environmental performance.

This leadership expansion equips HHM to address evolving maritime trade dynamics through coordinated marketing and strategic outreach. Meyn’s background in brand transformation and global positioning aligns with the port’s goals of enhancing visibility and partnerships across supply chains.

The dual-board model fosters balanced decision-making, combining Mattern’s established oversight with Meyn’s fresh perspectives on communication and market engagement. Their combined networks span shipping lines, terminal operators, and logistics providers, enabling targeted initiatives in key trade corridors.

Hamburg remains a vital European gateway, handling diverse cargo types and supporting regional economic activity. HHM’s role includes promoting infrastructure upgrades, intermodal connectivity, and sustainable practices to maintain competitiveness.

Digital integration, as highlighted by Kuntze, involves smart port systems for real-time vessel tracking, automated cargo handling, and predictive maintenance. These tools reduce turnaround times, lower emissions, and improve resource allocation.

Meyn’s consultancy experience informs data-driven marketing approaches, such as customer segmentation and performance analytics, to attract new business volumes. Collaborative projects with stakeholders will focus on resilient supply solutions amid fluctuating demand patterns.

The appointment signals HHM’s proactive stance in a consolidated industry landscape. By strengthening executive capacity, the organization aims to amplify the port’s value proposition internationally while supporting local ecosystem growth.

Future efforts may include expanded participation in trade forums, customized client programs, and joint ventures on green corridor development. This structured leadership transition positions Hamburg to navigate market shifts effectively, ensuring sustained relevance in global logistics networks.
