Microsoft announced an additional $4 billion investment over the next three years for its data centre complex in Fairwater, Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, bringing the total project investment to $7.3 billion. The facility, described as the “world’s most powerful AI” data centre, is set to begin operations in early 2026.

The Mount Pleasant site is designed to develop and train advanced AI models, equipped with hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GPUs connected by extensive fiber networks. These systems will enable the training of cutting-edge AI models, offering performance up to ten times greater than existing supercomputers.

Microsoft has implemented sustainable cooling solutions for the facility, with 90% of operations relying on a closed-loop liquid cooling system filled during construction. The remaining 10% will use external air for cooling, with water used only on warmer days. The company stated that water usage will be minimal, comparable to that of a restaurant, and it has prepaid for energy and electrical infrastructure to avoid increasing costs for Wisconsin residents.

During peak construction, the project employed 3,000 workers daily. Once both phases are complete, the data centre is expected to provide permanent employment for 800 people, supporting local economic growth.

Microsoft’s chief strategy officer stated: “The investment in Fairwater reflects our commitment to advancing AI innovation while supporting sustainable development and local communities.” The company aims to balance technological advancement with environmental responsibility, ensuring efficient resource use.

The Fairwater project aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy to expand its AI infrastructure. Despite earlier pauses in the project’s second phase due to technological shifts and the cancellation of other data centre plans, this investment underscores Microsoft’s focus on strengthening its AI capabilities in Wisconsin to meet growing global demand.

By enhancing its data centre with state-of-the-art technology and sustainable practices, Microsoft is positioning the Fairwater facility as a leader in AI development, contributing to both technological innovation and regional economic benefits.
