NKT president and chief executive Claes Westerlind said: “We are honoured to be selected as the preferred bidder for EGL3, a key project in the upgrade and decarbonisation of Great Britain’s power system.” He noted that the milestone continues NKT’s collaboration with the transmission owners and reflects the company’s commitment to supporting the UK grid.
Eastern Green Link 3 is part of a wider UK initiative to expand and modernise the electricity transmission network. The objective is to strengthen system reliability and enhance the delivery of clean energy across the country.
National Grid project director Mark Brackley said: “Confirming NKT as preferred bidder for the cable system is a major milestone for EGL3. The project will form a vital new part of the UK’s electricity backbone, carrying clean, homegrown energy to where it is needed most and helping to deliver a more affordable and secure energy future.”
SSEN Transmission deputy project director James Johnson said: “Appointing NKT as preferred bidder for the subsea cable system marks a significant milestone for EGL3. The project will be vital in unlocking Scotland’s vast renewable energy resources, ensuring they can reach homes and businesses across Great Britain, while strengthening the resilience of the transmission network.”
The selection of NKT represents a key step toward advancing the EGL3 interconnector, which is expected to play an important role in integrating renewable generation and improving cross-regional power flows. By establishing a robust subsea and land-based cable connection, the project is positioned to support long-term goals for low-carbon energy delivery in Great Britain.
The next phase will involve negotiations between NKT and the joint venture partners to finalize a firm contract for the supply and installation of the cable system. Once completed, EGL3 is anticipated to contribute to the broader decarbonisation strategy and ensure a more reliable energy infrastructure.
