Dominion Energy’s VC Summer nuclear station in Fairfield County, South Carolina, has been granted a 20-year operating license extension by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, allowing operations until June 2062. Initially licensed in 1982, the facility received its first extension in 2004, permitting operations until 2042.

Dominion Energy secured similar extension approvals for Surry power station and North Anna power station.

The station, featuring a three-loop Westinghouse pressurized water reactor, generates 966 megawatts, powering 242,000 homes without carbon dioxide emissions. Regular maintenance, including a recent main transformer replacement, ensures its reliability. Dominion Energy’s chief nuclear officer, Eric Carr, stated: “VC Summer nuclear station has provided reliable, affordable and increasingly clean energy for our customers in the Palmetto State for more than 40 years. With steady population growth and economic development, South Carolina will continue to need a clean and reliable workhorse like VC Summer to power our customers’ homes and businesses around the clock well into the future.”

VC Summer supports Fairfield County with over $33 million in annual tax contributions and community donations. Dominion Energy serves 3.6 million electricity customers across Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, and 500,000 natural gas customers in South Carolina. The company has also extended licenses for its Surry and North Anna stations and is pursuing renewal for its Millstone station.
