At Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2025, Yang Lifan, Deputy General Manager of China Unicom Beijing, delivered a keynote speech titled "Are We Ready for AI" during the 5G-A Industry Roundtable. Alongside Huawei, Yang introduced Smart Operation Network 2.0, emphasizing the rapid growth of data driven by artificial intelligence (AI). This growth is transforming communication networks into smarter, more automated systems. China Unicom Beijing and Huawei aim to evolve 5G-A infrastructure from basic connectivity to intelligent platforms, integrating advanced information and communication technologies.

In Beijing, the two companies have implemented the world’s first 3D smart 5G-A network, covering both aerial and terrestrial environments. This network addresses the demands of the AI era, ensuring widespread 5G-A access. They have also tested a pioneering 1:1 3D networking model, coordinating high- and mid-band frequencies to deliver a seamless user experience. This initiative confirms the viability of high-band networking for enhanced connectivity.

Yang Lifan, Deputy General Manager of China Unicom Beijing, stated: “Future networks will feature space-air-ground and spectrum coordination, and their O&M will be dynamic and automated with the help of AI agents. Instead of passively reacting, operators should proactively embrace cutting-edge technology to make communications networks truly intelligent.”

David Li, Vice President of Huawei’s Wireless Network Product Line, added: “In order to explore new connection spaces, and unlock new business value, 5G-A networks should fulfill the diverse needs of different applications, user groups, and services. Prioritizing experience-centered networks, we will continue to enable technological innovations in high uplink, low latency, and smart operations to facilitate the implementation of China Unicom Beijing’s space-air-ground integrated smart network strategy, with the aim of delivering more-than-fast experiences to users in Beijing.”

China Unicom Beijing and Huawei are leveraging AI to enable fully automated network operations, targeting industry-wide adoption. By 2026, they plan to automate all network processes, including site deployment, maintenance, optimization, and customer support. Additionally, they have introduced a digital twin system for high-speed rail, enhancing passenger services through real-time visualization.

This collaboration underscores a commitment to advancing network intelligence and user experience. By integrating AI-driven solutions and innovative 5G-A infrastructure, China Unicom Beijing and Huawei are setting a foundation for next-generation connectivity across diverse applications in Beijing and beyond.
