BW ESS, Ibersun Form Spanish Battery JV

24 Jun 2025  by renews
BW ESS and Ibersun have entered a joint venture agreement to develop large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Spain. The collaboration involves the development of eight greenfield BESS projects, totaling 2.2 GW of installed capacity, with each project designed for a four-hour storage duration. Ownership of the projects will be equally shared between the two companies.

This partnership comes at a time of significant growth in Spain’s energy storage market. The country’s National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan targets the installation of 22.5 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030. The increasing need for storage is largely driven by the expansion of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, and is further influenced by the limited interconnection between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe. Battery storage is viewed as a key solution for grid stability and efficient use of renewable generation by reducing curtailment during periods of surplus energy production.

The eight projects identified by BW ESS and Ibersun are expected to reach ready-to-build (RTB) status within two years. The companies intend to pursue a range of revenue generation strategies, though details have not been disclosed.

Ibersun, based in the Basque Country, has been involved in renewable energy development since its founding in 2019. The company’s leadership team brings over 25 years of industry experience in Spain and international markets. BW ESS, which has experience in multiple global energy storage projects, is now entering the Spanish market for the first time through this joint initiative.

Isaac Garcia Moreno, executive director of BW ESS, said: “We are proud to be developing our first projects in Spain with Ibersun, a trusted partner with over 25 years of market experience. We have a common objective to improve Spain’s grid resilience and support the market’s ambitious energy storage growth targets. Recent events have underlined that there’s no time to waste in working towards these goals, and we look forward to applying a wealth of experience drawn from multiple global markets to the Spanish context.”

Javier Arkotxa and Jose Antonio Gutiérrez, directors and founders of Ibersun, added in a joint statement: “It’s essential for us that our work blends seamlessly and respectfully with its surroundings and we are delighted to be partnering with a business who shares these priorities. Spain is one of the largest markets for BESS and our joint venture with a global leader like BW ESS is going to help us in our efforts to continue developing the country’s energy transition.”

The joint venture is positioned to contribute significantly to Spain’s clean energy infrastructure, supporting the broader shift toward renewable energy and energy security.
