FLNG Gimi works on BP's Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project;
The FLNG Gimi began producing LNG earlier this year and reached commercial operations shortly after receiving feed gas from the floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO) GTA, positioned approximately 40 kilometers offshore. The GTA project is considered one of BP’s largest current energy developments.
BP holds a 56% operating stake in the project, with Kosmos Energy at 27%, Petrosen at 10%, and Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures (SMH) at 7%. Kosmos stated: “The announcement of COD marks a significant milestone for the project partners, as LNG production volumes have successfully been ramped up to a level equivalent to the annual contracted volumes of approximately 2.4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), or around 90% of nameplate capacity of 2.7 mtpa.”
Kosmos also reported that the first LNG was achieved in February, followed by the initial cargo in April. The second and third shipments were completed in May and early June, respectively, with a fourth currently loading. The fifth cargo is expected at the beginning of the third quarter, with Kosmos forecasting 3.5 gross cargos for the second quarter.
Golar LNG emphasized that the COD milestone represents progress not only for the company but also for the region, introducing Mauritania and Senegal as new LNG exporters. The company stated: “The COD milestone marks a major achievement for one of Africa’s deepest offshore developments. We look forward to continuing working together with the GTA operator BP and its partners Kosmos, Petrosen and SMH, as well as Mauritanian and Senegalese authorities, to deliver safe and reliable operations and to create value to all stakeholders.”
Following the COD of FLNG Gimi and the announcement of two FLNG charters in Argentina on May 2, 2025, Golar is accelerating development of its next units. The company is advancing design options for new FLNG units based on demand, including a 3.5 mtpa MKII at CIMC Raffles shipyard, a 5 mtpa MKIII, and an updated 2.7 mtpa MKI.
Meanwhile, BP continues to pursue upstream growth as part of its broader energy strategy. The company recently began gas production at the Cypre project offshore Trinidad and Tobago and initiated the second development phase at a field off Egypt’s coast. These efforts are part of BP’s plan to launch ten new projects by the end of 2027.
