Haute-Sorne, Switzerland Geothermal Project Given Go-Ahead for Stimulation Tests

Geo-Energie Jura AG has received approval to begin stimulation tests for its geothermal project in Haute-Sorne, located in Switzerland’s Jura canton. The tests are set to start by July 7, lasting one to two weeks, with the entire process expected to take about six weeks. Following the tests, seismic sensors will be installed in the well for long-term monitoring.

The project, a significant milestone for geothermal energy in the region, involves a 4,000-meter-deep well drilled at Haute-Sorne, completed in August 2024. This well, the first in the Jura Arc between Geneva and Basel to penetrate the crystalline basement, underwent geophysical measurements and a leak test to prepare for hydraulic stimulation. The authorization was granted after cantonal authorities, supported by experts, verified Geo-Energie Jura’s detailed work plan.

The stimulation tests, conducted at a depth of approximately 3,800 meters, will involve injecting municipal water in stages, without chemicals or solids, at a maximum flow rate of 60 liters per minute. A spokesperson for Geo-Energie Jura stated: “The stimulation tests will be carried out with a sophisticated seismic monitoring system to precisely track induced microseismicity.” Seismograms will be publicly available in near real-time on the Swiss Seismological Service (SED) website. Injections will pause for analysis if local magnitude reaches 0.3 and stop if it reaches 1.5, with magnitudes independently determined by the SED under ETH Zurich.

The test results will play a critical role in deciding the project’s future. Geo-Energie Jura will submit findings, including updated risk analysis and geological models, to the Canton of Jura. The Independent Expert Group (GEI), tasked with monitoring seismic risks, will provide scientific support and recommendations. The cantonal government will then assess whether to authorize the project’s next phase, based on compliance and acceptable risk levels.

The Haute-Sorne project aims to advance geothermal energy development in Switzerland, contributing to sustainable energy solutions. The careful monitoring and rigorous evaluation process underscore the commitment to safety and environmental responsibility in the region.
