The project supports Belgium’s broader energy transition and is aligned with both national and European Union decarbonisation goals. Designed to provide essential grid-balancing services, the battery installation will manage fluctuations between electricity supply and demand, particularly those caused by the intermittent nature of wind and solar power.
André Autrand, CEO of I4B, commented: “This flagship BESS project addresses critical energy security and grid balancing challenges. It will benefit Belgian households, industry, and the wider economy.”
By absorbing excess energy when renewable generation is high and releasing it during periods of increased demand, the Visé battery park will help reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based backup systems and improve the efficiency of energy distribution. It is also expected to play a key role in enhancing energy security during peak periods and emergency situations.
The investment is a continuation of I4B’s strategy to focus on low-carbon infrastructure. The fund already has active interests in solar and onshore wind assets and is expanding its footprint in energy storage as part of its long-term vision for a cleaner energy system.
Samuel de Lhoneux, I4B’s Chief Investment Officer, stated: “This investment exemplifies our ability to deliver large-scale, impactful projects with leading industry partners. The energy transition demands collaboration, long-term vision, and innovative financing solutions.”
I4B led the structuring of the investment, leveraging its expertise in financial and contractual frameworks to establish a strong partnership model with Luminus. The collaboration is seen as a model for how private capital and technical expertise can be combined to deliver infrastructure that meets future energy demands.
The Visé project is scheduled to play a vital role in Belgium’s energy infrastructure once operational. It reflects increasing interest in battery storage across Europe as countries seek to optimise renewable energy use and modernise their grids.
With this initiative, I4B reinforces its role as a key contributor to sustainable infrastructure development and supports Belgium’s progress toward a low-emissions energy system through innovation and strategic investment.
