Canadian Regulator Says Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Pipeline Project Has Started

06 Jun 2025  by Reuters
British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Office announced on Thursday that the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) natural gas pipeline project has achieved significant progress. This ensures the project’s 2014 environmental assessment certificate remains valid indefinitely, unless altered under the Environmental Assessment Act.

The 900-kilometer pipeline will connect Hudson’s Hope in northeastern B.C. to Lelu Island near Prince Rupert on Canada’s Pacific Coast. Its purpose is to supply natural gas to the proposed Ksi Lisims liquefied natural gas facility, with an annual capacity of 12 million tonnes.

In March 2024, the Nisga’a First Nation and Western LNG acquired the project from TC Energy. The 2014 certificate required substantial progress by November 25, 2024. To confirm this, the Environmental Assessment Office conducted a review, including site visits, project documentation, and input from local First Nations.

The government stated: “Compliance and enforcement officers will maintain oversight of the PRGT project during its construction and operation to ensure it meets all environmental regulations.” This monitoring will support the project’s compliance with environmental standards throughout its lifecycle.
