The Mowry Composite TPS spans most of southwestern Wyoming and extends into parts of Utah and Colorado. The USGS estimates it contains 473 million barrels (MMbbl) of oil and 27 trillion cubic feet (Tft3) of natural gas. Since exploration began in the 1950s, the region has already produced approximately 90 MMbbl of oil and 7.3 Tft3 of natural gas, indicating its long-standing contribution to energy production.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated: “This new USGS assessment underscores the role of American energy resources in strengthening our energy independence and driving economic development across the West.” The findings align with efforts to expand energy resource development, supporting economic growth in the region through increased exploration and extraction activities.
The assessment’s results are expected to guide future resource management and land use planning by the Bureau of Land Management, which oversees energy development on federal lands. This information will help shape strategies to balance energy production with sustainable land management, ensuring efficient use of these resources.
The identification of these resources reflects ongoing efforts to evaluate and utilize domestic energy reserves, contributing to energy security and regional economic opportunities. The Mowry Composite TPS is poised to play a key role in meeting energy demands while supporting development in Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado.
