Arup, a UK-based design consultancy, has been selected as the lead engineering consultant for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) Millbrae Campus Improvements project in the United States. Working alongside San Francisco Public Works (SFPW) and its Bureau of Architecture, Arup will provide engineering expertise for new constructions and specialized design services to enhance the campus.

The final phase of the project is set to be completed by 2031.

The project involves upgrading existing facilities through retrofitting and renovation, as well as constructing two new buildings: an administrative office, a water quality laboratory, and a wellness pavilion. Arup, in collaboration with subconsultants including HRA Engineering & Energy Services, Vibro-Acoustics, Clearstory, Banks Landl, and AR Green, will deliver over 20 multidisciplinary services. These include structural and mechanical engineering, acoustic design, energy solutions, and other technical support to ensure a comprehensive approach.

A key focus of the Millbrae Campus Improvements is sustainability and resilience. The project aims to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification and incorporate measures to enhance electrical reliability. Arup will also provide guidance on implementing a microgrid, improving seismic resilience, and developing strategies to address challenges like wildfire smoke and extreme heat, ensuring the campus remains functional and adaptable.

Currently in the schematic design and construction phase, the project will unfold in three stages, with completion expected by 2031. Throughout the process, the site will remain operational to support ongoing activities. “Building on our longstanding partnership with SFPUC, the Millbrae Campus Improvements project allows us to continue our close collaboration, while also helping to bring their critical operational resilience and sustainability goals to life,” said Arup principal Alex Lofting. SFPW architect Paul De Freitas added: “As we assembled the project team for this complex, multiphase campus project, Arup stood out for their innovative approaches and ability to integrate into a collaborative, high-functioning project team that will enable us to design and deliver the project successfully.”

In a separate development, Arup is also contributing to a building reuse project at 65 Gresham Street in London, UK, led by J.P. Morgan Asset Management and executed by Mace. Arup’s role includes overseeing services engineering, demonstrating its expertise in managing diverse, high-profile projects globally.
