Ukrainian Company Plans Egg Gigafarm

Oliyar, a leading Ukrainian oil and fat manufacturer, has announced plans to construct a farm for 2.3 million laying hens in the Shchyretskaya neighborhood of the Lviv region, approximately 80 kilometers east of Poland’s border. The facility, comprising 20 modern henhouses for Hy-Line Brown crossbreed hens, is expected to produce 1.6 million eggs daily, potentially reshaping the egg market in Eastern Europe.

Oliyar’s environmental assessment report stated: “The henhouses will be modern, with all systems and technological processes being automated.” This investment reflects the company’s commitment to advanced agricultural practices, enhancing efficiency and output.

Primarily known for producing and processing sunflower, rapeseed, and soybean oils, Oliyar exports to the EU, Middle East, Canada, the U.S., and Africa. The new egg farm diversifies its portfolio, positioning Oliyar to meet growing regional demand for eggs while supporting Ukraine’s agricultural sector.

Despite ongoing challenges, Ukraine anticipates a significant rise in egg production. The Kyiv School of Economics forecasts production to reach 855,000 tonnes by 2033, a 31% increase from 2023, driven by investments like Oliyar’s. The Lviv farm is expected to intensify competition in Eastern Europe, particularly impacting Poland’s egg market. Poland’s Radio Pin noted: “Investments of such a scale may seriously enhance competition for Poland’s poultry and egg producers, which may affect the profitability of Poland’s production in the future.”

Poland, with 54 million laying hens in 2024, produced 11 billion eggs, up 0.9 million from the previous year, fueled by strong domestic consumption. Per capita egg consumption in Poland rose 27% in 2024, averaging 179 eggs per person, according to the Central Statistical Office. Anna Iżyńska-Tymoniuk, communications manager at Otwarte Klatki, stated: “In terms of the number of eggs laid, we rank 5th in the European Union. About 40% of our production is intended for export. The main export destinations are Germany and the Netherlands, although we also export to Great Britain, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Hungary.”

Poland, the EU’s second-largest egg exporter after the Netherlands, generated €471 million in export revenue in 2024. Oliyar’s new farm may challenge this position, but it also underscores Ukraine’s growing role in meeting global egg consumption needs through innovative agricultural projects.
