Wacker Begins Production of Hybrid Polymers in Germany

16 May 2025  by chemengonline
Wacker Chemie AG, based in Munich, Germany, has launched production of hybrid polymers at its Nünchritz site in Germany, with the new facility currently ramping up operations. These hybrid polymers serve as binders for high-quality adhesives and sealants, widely used in construction, assembly adhesives, parquet flooring, and liquid waterproofing membranes for roofs and balconies. The alpha-silane-terminated hybrid polymers enable the creation of tin-free, consumer-friendly products. The facility, built with an investment in the double-digit million euro range, has created 50 new jobs at the site. Plans to expand sealant manufacturing at Nünchritz were first announced in 2023.

The advanced facility replaces the existing production plant at Wacker’s Burghausen site, significantly increasing hybrid polymer output. Christian Kirsten, a Managing Board member, stated: “With annual growth rates of well over five percent in some cases, the market for hybrid polymers is extremely attractive for us.” He noted that Wacker is a global leader in silane-terminated polymers, and the new facility supports customer growth while aligning with the company’s focus on innovative, high-value specialty products.

The Nünchritz production line incorporates cutting-edge technology for efficient, continuous manufacturing. Tom Koini, Head of the Silicones business division, said: “The new facility’s production capacity will increase our output many times over.” The plant is designed for future expansion to meet growing market demand, ensuring flexibility for further capacity increases if needed.

Hybrid polymers, marketed as GENIOSIL STP-E, are key to formulating high-performance adhesives, sealants, and waterproofing membranes for industrial and construction applications. The alpha-silane technology supports environmentally friendly, tin-free formulations, which Koini emphasized: “Aspects like these, alongside performance, are becoming more and more important in the formulation of adhesives and sealants. They are what makes our hybrid polymers so attractive to customers.” He anticipates strong demand growth in the coming years.

The project also benefits the Saxony region, where Wacker, with 1,600 employees, is the largest chemical employer. The addition of 50 jobs strengthens local economic development while advancing sustainable manufacturing solutions.
