ClassNK Issues Guidelines for Safe Operation of Ammonia-Fueled Vessels

14 May 2025  by offshore energy
Japanese classification society ClassNK has issued new guidelines to facilitate the safe use and handling of ammonia as a marine fuel. Released recently, these guidelines prioritize seafarer safety and outline standard procedures for managing ammonia on vessels, including health measures for handling leaks, requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency response tools.

The guidelines detail specific precautions and management practices for the transportation, storage, and operation of ammonia fuel. Designed with seafarers in mind, they provide practical, field-applicable information to ensure safe and effective handling of this alternative fuel.

ClassNK noted that alternative fuel vessels currently represent nearly 40% of new vessel orders, with expectations of further growth. However, the society highlighted a lack of sufficient operational information for such vessels. To address this, ClassNK developed the guidelines using the latest data and developments from Japan and globally, ensuring they remain relevant and adaptable.

The classification society stated: “As part of the ClassNK Transition Support Services, which comprehensively supports the smooth transition of customers to zero emissions, ClassNK will continue to contribute to the safe operation and active introduction of alternative fuel vessels.” The guidelines will be regularly updated based on industry discussions, research advancements, and new insights to support evolving needs.

In the past year, ClassNK also published updated guidelines for liquefied hydrogen carriers and ships using alternative fuels, reflecting its ongoing commitment to advancing safety standards for emerging marine technologies. These efforts underscore ClassNK’s role in promoting the safe adoption of sustainable fuels, supporting the maritime industry’s transition to lower-emission operations.

The ammonia fuel guidelines provide a comprehensive framework for ship operators, enhancing safety and operational clarity as the industry increasingly embraces alternative fuels to meet environmental goals.
