French energy company Engie announced a new agreement, on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, to supply up to 300 megawatts of wind power to Cipher Mining Inc., a U.S.-based data center operator . This marks Engie’s first co-location power deal, where the data center and wind power facility share the same site.

The power purchase agreement enables Cipher Mining’s data center to access electricity during times of surplus wind generation. This setup supports grid stability and ensures a reliable energy supply. By locating the data center alongside the wind turbines, the agreement addresses potential grid challenges for the energy-intensive data center industry.

An Engie spokesperson stated: "This contract with Cipher confirms that signals from customers regarding renewables remain encouraging in the U.S." The arrangement highlights growing interest in sustainable energy solutions among U.S. businesses.

Engie currently operates approximately 7 gigawatts of renewable energy assets across the United States, with a significant portion based in Texas. The deal reflects ongoing efforts to integrate renewable energy into high-demand sectors like data processing, fostering efficient and stable energy use.
