French Firm Wins Work On Qatarenergy’s Giant Gas Field Expansion Project

Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T), an Indian company, has awarded a detailed engineering design contract to Technip Energies, a French engineering firm, for an offshore compression project commissioned by QatarEnergy LNG, a subsidiary of Qatar’s state-owned QatarEnergy. The project is part of the North Field Production Sustainability Offshore Compression Project (NFPS COMP 4), located offshore Qatar.

The contract, assigned by L&T’s Hydrocarbon Business (L&T Energy Hydrocarbon – LTEH), involves detailed engineering for two offshore compression complexes. Each complex includes large offshore platforms, flare platforms, interconnected bridges, and related structures. Technip Energies, having completed the front-end engineering and design phase, will now provide comprehensive engineering services. The contract is valued between €50 million and €250 million, marking a significant project for the company.

“We are pleased to be entrusted by L&T and QatarEnergy LNG for the Detailed Engineering Design of the NFPS COMP 4 project,” said Marco Villa, Chief Business Officer of Technip Energies. “This selection highlights the confidence and trust in our engineering expertise and Technip Energies’ established capability to support Qatar’s energy security, ambitious projects and objectives.”

The North Field, located off Qatar’s northeast coast, is the world’s largest single non-associated natural gas field, covering over 6,000 square kilometers. Shared with Iran, where it is known as South Pars, the field holds recoverable reserves exceeding 900 trillion standard cubic feet, accounting for roughly 10% of global known reserves. Discovered in 1971, it was assessed through 15 appraisal wells over 14 years.

The North Field Expansion Project, including North Field East, North Field South, and North Field West, aims to increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 million tons per annum to 142 million tons by 2030. The NFPS COMP 4 project supports this goal by enhancing offshore compression infrastructure.

L&T secured the main contract for the project earlier this month, valued at over $1.7 billion, making it the largest single contract in the company’s history. The collaboration between L&T, Technip Energies, and QatarEnergy LNG underscores a commitment to advancing Qatar’s energy infrastructure through specialized engineering and sustainable production enhancements.
