Octopus Group in Talks to Launch Mobile Network Service

Octopus Group, a UK-based company known for transforming the energy and financial services sectors, is exploring a new venture into the mobile network industry. According to reports, the company has engaged in discussions with a major mobile operator to leverage existing infrastructure for a potential partnership, aiming to launch a mobile service that integrates with its energy and financial offerings.

The proposed mobile network would offer customers a comprehensive utilities package, combining telecoms with Octopus’s existing energy and financial services. Fern Trading, a subsidiary of Octopus, has reportedly approached major operators, including EE, Virgin Media O2, Vodafone, and Three UK, the latter two of which are planning a merger. A spokesperson for Octopus stated: “We are exploring opportunities to create a seamless, customer-focused service that integrates telecoms with our existing offerings.”

Fern Trading already manages several telecom brands, such as Jurassic Fibre, Swish Fibre, Giganet, and AllPoints Fibre, which were consolidated into a single entity in 2023. Additionally, Fern Trading’s Y Corp has a wholesale agreement with Three UK’s network and launched a data-only eSIM in November 2024. While it remains unclear whether the new mobile network would incorporate Y Corp’s offerings, the initiative reflects Octopus’s growing presence in the connectivity market.

To spearhead this project, Octopus has appointed Adam Dunlop, former CEO of TalkTalk’s consumer business, to lead the development efforts. Octopus’s prior experience in connectivity includes its 2023 acquisition of Shell Energy UK, which encompassed broadband and home phone customers, before selling it to TalkTalk in 2024. Dunlop commented: “Our goal is to deliver innovative, customer-centric solutions that enhance connectivity and complement Octopus’s broader service portfolio.”

This move aligns with Octopus Group’s strategy to diversify its services and provide integrated solutions for consumers. By leveraging partnerships with established mobile operators, the company aims to create a competitive offering that meets the evolving needs of UK customers. The initiative is expected to drive innovation in the telecom sector, create jobs, and enhance customer convenience through a unified utilities package.

Octopus’s exploration of the mobile network market builds on its reputation for disrupting traditional industries with customer-focused solutions. As the company continues to develop this project, it seeks to strengthen its position as a leader in integrated services, contributing to economic growth and technological advancement in the UK.
